On August 8, 2023, a tragedy struck Maui in three locations. All were hit hard but in Lahaina, fires ripped down the hillside at 80 miles per hour. People who were not immediately notified were faced with the immediate horror of that scene. Many were caught off guard, and died in their homes, in their cars, and on foot trying to flee. News stories relay the death tolls and the names of our community members whose bodies have not yet been recovered. In Lahaina, their loss is felt deeply. We all lost someone important to us and will grieve their loss forever.
Sadly, many pets and other animals did not survive the fire or smoke inhalation and were overtaken while running away. To make matters worse, pet owners and qualified animal rescuers were forbidden to enter the burn zone to retrieve pets or any animals stuck inside. It was an agonizing wait.
SOME ANIMALS SURVIVED! By standing by at the perimeters of the burn zone, Save Maui Cats, Assert, and our unbelievable volunteers were able to catch and rescue dozens of injured cats and kittens who struggled their way out of the burn zone and into our loving care. It was our greatest joy to be able to save some of these pets and reunite them with a family who may have otherwise lost everything.
Heartbreakingly, some cats who survived the fire could not be reunited with their owners. Some never had a home to begin with. Many animals needed emergency care and time was not on their side. Cats are low to the ground and many had been breathing in ash for several weeks. Their bodies were covered in it and they'd been ingesting it when attempting to clean themselves. Others suffered from burns, smoke inhalation, severe malnutrition and dehydration. These emaciated "kings of the jungle" had held onto life for as long as they could, and we thought they deserved everything we had.
We set up a fundraiser to help cover the medically necessary treatment they received. Additional donations are going toward caring for the lucky animals that survived the fire but still need our services (TNRM).
Please consider donating to help us continue our mission to humanely curb cat overpopulation while caring for the homeless, hungry and forgotten cats of Maui.
Thank you.
BRAVE CAT SURVIVED 20 DAYS INSIDE BURN ZONE
8/28/23 Starving, injured cat struggling to walk
8/29/23 Update: Cat was humanely trapped. She received surgery and vet care for a broken hip and severe burns
9/4/23 Sad Update: It breaks our heart to share this news but sadly this sweet kitty didn't make it. She survived her surgery and was gently cared for but was ultimately too weak to continue. We are comforted that in her last days, she finally got to know love. Thank you for rooting for her
Rescuer Sarah Haynes of Kitty Charm Farm and her carload of starving kittens. Hungry, terrified cats and kittens have been seen all over Lahaina, many of whom have suffered burns, smoke inhalation and possibly the lost lives of their human families. We're doing our best to rescue the ones on the perimeter but authorities are still blocking the burn area.
TRAPPED ANIMALS HAVE NOT HAD ACCESS TO FOOD OR WATER SINCE 8-8-2023 - MANY ARE STILL ALIVE!
Pet owners are heartbroken that they can not get back inside the burn zone to collect their pets. Areas that have been searched (for humans) are still being blocked by Maui authorities. Teams specially trained for Animal Rescue in war zones (Ukraine) and Natural Disasters (Hurricane Katrina) are also being denied access.
ASSERT.EARTH HAS OFFERED TO DONATE THEIR SERVICES TO MAUI, BUT WERE TURNED DOWN
